Sir
Your letter of the 28 Ulto was this day Received — I feel much mortifyed that any mistake should arise in a transaction of so complex a nature as that which has occured between us — it is the first from the many thousands of dollars that have been by me transmitted to the different parts of the Continent — however the loss I conceive should fall on the United States and flatter myself to have it allowed on Settlement of my Accounts — but untill they are Settled it would not be proper for me to advance the Sum — I would suggest the propriety of your Qualifying to the transaction and then Charge the loss on your accounts with Mr Hodgdon — with whom I will Settle the matter I am Sir
