Extract of a letter from Jonathan Dayton Esq^r to the Secretary of War — dated Elizabeth Town July 23 1792 — [Rec^d from State Dep^t Nov. 21, 1904 B.P.O. 30180] "In consequence of what passed at the tavern in this place between yourself, Capt. Stake and me, respecting some horsemen's Saddles, the property of M^r Williamson, he has incurred some expence to fit up the fourteen, which he had on hand with mail pillions, surcingles &c — Capt Stake has examined and approved of them, as appears from his certificate enclosed" [ Enclosure ] "Sir — "Agreeably to your request I have examined the horsemen's saddles offered for Sale by M^r Williamson, and find them very good in quality & remarkably well adapted for the dragoon Service, for which they were intended — They are fourteen in number, & offered at the moderate price of Six dollars each, & I would therefore recommend that they should be purchased for the public Service" "June 10^th 1792."
