Fort Washington, July 5th 1793
[Marginalia: Nro [undecipherable]]
Dear Sir,
The [undecipherable] has yet [undecipherable] to take charge of its [undecipherable]. The [undecipherable] goes on as [undecipherable]. I have furnished Mr. [Magoon?] with their [undecipherable] for the property & hauling [them?] from the [Public?] Department to Fort [Hamilton?] to the Garrison - at a price that [was?] from two hundred & fifty dollars, which will be a very great acquisition.
But I have a little — About ½ past one o'Clock on the morning of the 4th [Inst.?], the Indians broke the [enclosure?] which held the cattle at Fort Jefferson & drove off the whole (viz [16?] head) not more. [That?] the Goods from the Garrison — about ½ past [10?] of the same day, the Men [one?] of them was taken [on?] Gen[eral?]. [undecipherable]'s expedition, (whose name is [undecipherable] of [Ziegler?]'s) and a Man of Capt. [Buchanan?]'s [Company?] [undecipherable] — his name is William [Dunn?] & was [taken?] [undecipherable] in the [undecipherable] [bar?] cattle, came in to Fort Jefferson — they have not [undecipherable] this post — but from direct information & [undecipherable] from Fort Jefferson. We have the following particulars: That it is beyond a doubt that [undecipherable] [Freeman?] & [Guards?] are dead. [undecipherable] [undecipherable] & his party — the Indians are determined [undecipherable], they will not [treat?] unless Fort Jefferson & [undecipherable] [Blair?] are given up. But they [took?] eight [undecipherable] Prisoners on the [undecipherable] and [Mr.?] [undecipherable] [chief?] who was sitting [camp?] at [undecipherable] [undecipherable] of them [undecipherable] were [allotted?] to the [Shawnee?]
and [gave?] to the [Governors?]. But the [Shawnee?] [immediately?] [burned?] [theirs?]. The [Governors?] [undecipherable] in a very [remarkable?] [Nation?] [undecipherable] [theirs?] — But the Indians now hold every [undecipherable] to them either as [Slaves?] or [Deserters?].
They [say?] that the Indians have [several?] times [gathered?] to attack Fort Jefferson — but have [always?] been [prevented?] by the [backwardness?] of [some?] Nation — [that?] [some?] time [lately?] Deserters to them have [informed?] them of [Facility?] in [laying?] off the [Provisions?] — on the [road?] from [undecipherable] to Fort Jefferson — they [verify?] that [it?] will be very [troublesome?] [this?] [summer?]. [May?] being [undecipherable] of the [murder?] of [Indians?] who attacked [undecipherable] [undecipherable] [undecipherable]. [undecipherable] [undecipherable] is [accused?] of [undecipherable] them [undecipherable] here — the [undecipherable] party were only [four?] — the [third?] [part?] is the [last?] of [undecipherable] [undecipherable] [undecipherable] [undecipherable] [undecipherable]. I have not heard any [undecipherable].
[Enclosed?] find [below?] the copy of [undecipherable] Gen[eral?]. [Court?] Martial for the [trial?] of Mr. [undecipherable] — Mr. [undecipherable] is the [subject?] [undecipherable] [alleged?] [sign?] [undecipherable] [undecipherable] [undecipherable] is a misrepresentation of the [Case?], but [however?] [undecipherable] [undecipherable] before the [court?] — the [order?] was [undecipherable] to [undecipherable], so he [got?] a [undecipherable]. To [undecipherable] the [Side?] — Mr. [Banton?] [undecipherable] is [that?] [undecipherable] of [undecipherable] [undecipherable] which respects me is a [falsehood?] — [undecipherable] [informed?] me for one of [those?] [undecipherable] which were on the [stores?]. [Respectfully?] [refused?] from the [Side?], [offering?] to him that my [undecipherable] was so great with respect to [undecipherable] on [undecipherable] [undecipherable]
on the [face?] of the money. [Whereas?] Mr [undecipherable] [called?] a [note?], he must [buy?] one [undecipherable]. [undecipherable] the whole [Works?] [undecipherable] [aimed?] at you particularly.
I have no more at present —
And remain Dear Sir with the Sentiments
of respect & esteem
[Your most Obedient Servant?]
J. B. Harris [undecipherable]
[Please?] to [present?] my [respect?] to your family [undecipherable] [undecipherable] [undecipherable] [undecipherable]. I would have [wrote?] [undecipherable] [undecipherable] but I am in a great hurry —
yours J. H.
