The Receipt is as follows -
West Point Apr. [undecipherable]
Recd of Capt. B. Howe forty eight Dollars being the Bounty & premium of the following Recruits who were enlisted by me at West Point viz Ezekiel Dodge, John Ilbury, John Bowen, Edwards Strickling Mr Andersen & Henry Davis

Saml Steddily
He also signed Separate Receipts for their Bounty only which I herewith enclofe
Dodge & Stricklands have since deserted
I at that time represented to him the Danger of desertion & the loss of the premium, but he promised hard & I considered the company my own therefore thought myself Justifiable afterwards paid them the two Dollars extra Bounty & took their receipts for the same
I trust it must have been forgetfulness in him, but think I shall want every thing that I am entitled to in the Settlement of my Act as I have found recruiting very expensive this season —
