Dear Sir
I have just answered your public letter of the [undecipherable]
Instant — In answer to your private letter of the [undecipherable] it is necessary for me to assure you that your other private of the 8th was answered in the same hour in which I received it; which was about 6 o'clock in the afternoon of the 6th Inst. and my letter was sent the same evening to the post office
I am very sincere in the apology I have made as well in my private as in my public letter — There is no fictitious reason in either for my non acceptance; But, my desire, to be yet more candid with you, I perceive no temptation to my ambition in the consideration, which you enforce of being second in command
I am Dear Sir
