[letter from Major General Knox Sec^y of War to M^rs Jones & Smith April 28^th 1792] [Copy] War department April 28. 1792 Gentlemen You are hereby appointed to conduct the Seneka Indians now in this city, and those of the other tribes who accompany them, to the Genesee Country — Your route will be hence to Bethlehem, thence to Wyoming — Newton point Flanandagwe igenisee — where I suppose the Indians will disperse. Waggons are furnished in order to carry their bagage to the Wind Gap. You will use your highest exertions to keep the Indians sober on the route by representing to them the disgrace and pernicious consequences of a contrary conduct. Indeed it will be much in your power to effect this object as they will be unable to obtain liquor but through you — I have directed to be placed in the hands of M^r Joseph Smith in order to defray the expenses of this journey the Sum of Five hundred and thirty three Dollars and one third — He must keep a daily account of his expenditures always taking receipts for every payment, and upon his arrival at General Chapin's he must render the account and pay into his hands any balance which may remain. As you value your reputation you must regulate your expenditures by œconomy taking care however that the Indians are comfortably accomodated on the Road.
