Pittsburgh 22 April 1792 Sir I have applied to Turnbull & Marmie Agent who informs me that their Forge does not produce Iron sufficient for the demand of the Neighbourhood and that ten Tons could not be delivered in Pittsburgh before the last of May. I have also enquired of some Blacksmiths, who all say that Turnbull & Marmie's Iron is by no means of that quality Represented to you and that [undecipherable] or Agnes of Carlisle is much Superior for every purpose, I have therefore Contracted for Eight Tons of Agnes Iron to be delivered at this place on or before the 26 of May Carrying the Iron to be drawn proper for Gun Carriage, Both Horse Shoes, &c &c, Smithing Tools &c Assorted in Size & Quantity, agreeable to a Bill I have given. [strikethrough: price] price of the Iron at the work is $30 of Sun, the Carriage from Carlisle Works to Pittsburgh is $22.50 therefore the Iron will cost $[undecipherable] of Tunn, the other Two Tons, I shall endeavor to procure of Turnbull & Marmie if possible, if not I shall send an additional Order for [undecipherable] Agnes of Carlisle — yesterday fifty Rifles arrived in good order from Lancaster, but neither hammer nor prouches came with them. I presume [undecipherable] these articles must be forwarded at this place — for Lieu^t [undecipherable] party, who arrived here yesterday with twenty Indians, & is anxious to be equipped & to return to Fort Franklin, he says that five hundred Indians are Ready to join him — I have inclosed Cap^t Crawford's Receipt for one thousand dollars, he says he has already transmitted a Copy of his Military oath to the War office — The greater part of the Boats are ready to launch, a number of them are now a float, & ready to come forward to this place when wanted — I have just Received your favor of the 10^th Instant & shall immediately Employ Armourer to Repair the Arms. I have Rec^d of the Ray Allotted Two thousand dollars for which I have inclosed a Receipt. Fifty of the Rivern Boats first Contracted for will average fifty five feet each & fifteen feet Beam, average price of these will be $75 Including [undecipherable] & paint & dry 27.50 feet at 27[undecipherable], the Amt will be 2452 doll & 75 Cents.
