To Genl KnoxSecretary of War15 April 1792 Charleston 15 April 1792 Dear General I take the liberty of representing to you the distressed situation of Captain Adrian Proveaux whose petition to Congress is now before you for your consideration and opinion. The unhappy disturbances at Cape [undecipherable] his late residence, induced him to return to this place with his Wife and four Children who remain here with him in vary dependent circumstances, removed far from every resource except the bounty of Individuals and his present claim upon the United States. Sympathy for the sufferings of a late Brother Officer has induced me to state these facts to you–knowing that the benevolence of your disposition will press you to bring forward his business as early as possible. A final decision on his claim this session will not only releave him from much anxiety and suspense, if but (if founded in justice), supply the immediate wants of a suffering family. I have the honor to bewith respect & EsteemDear Sir Yr MoObdtSvtM Gish The Honble General KnoxSecretary at War
