War Department,
Febry 25th 1792
Sir,
Your letter of the 17th has been received.
It is of the highest importance that provisions should be thrown into Fort Franklin without the loss of a moment, for one hundred men for five on miles.
I shall expect you to forward the Indian roots as soon after their arrival as possible.
I shall order some indian roots to Pittsburg to be disposed of by the commissary officers for public service.
I have ordered the paymaster to transmit you by this draft, two thousand five hundred dollars — The remainder shall be paid upon the finishing the works.
You will remember to take duplicate vouchers, for every expenditure, and to keep your accounts in the most clear manner. The actual accounts must be produced to you after the work is finished, and you must send an abstract of them to me, so that the money may be forwarded.
Captain Hughes probably marches from Reading his way without about six hundred & twenty men — He will march rapidly to Pittsburg.
I enclose you letters for Lieutenant Jeffers.
You will take the most heedful care of the powder — It was powder belonging to the State which fell into the Susquehannah.
