Fort Pitt 15^th January, 1792 Sir I have enclosed a Sketch of the Works that I am now Erecting for theurance of the Town & the Public Stores, two of the Block Houses, one of the Ranges of Barracks Viz N.^o 2. is now going forward, the piquets are mostly on the ground & shall be planted as soon as Possible, the length of the Exterior lines of each side is 260 feet, perhaps the design may appear too large, but any of the Ranges of Buildings may be Omitted, the Barracks will not be much too large for 200 Men, the Number mentioned in your letter, and I am persuaded that 100 Men, will defend it against any number that may come against it without Artillery. Cap.^t Ashton the bearer has been with me on the Ground, and can give you any Information Respecting it. I have intended the Block Houses to be Raised Perpendicular, because those built with projecting upper Stories, are very Insubstantial Buildings, especially where Cannon are Mounted the lower Stories will make excellent Store Houses, the Magazine is placed in Bastion next the Town. I have Returned Gov.^r St Clair's letter, because I am well Assured, he is on his way to Philadelphia by land & must Shortly be there, the other letter I shall forward by first Conveyance down the Ohio, at present the River is shut up & too [undecipherable] Be pleased to direct W.^m W.^m Knox, to send forward [undecipherable] of Casting Musquet Ball, 17 [undecipherable] a pound, also Musquet & [undecipherable] Cartridge paper — Window Glass & Nails are wanted for the buildings — 6 pound [undecipherable] Work & Castles are also wanted, a few Bags of [undecipherable] for Case Shott is also wanted — Respected [undecipherable] I am able to have Compleated an Estimate of the Expence of the Work, before I requested Money to Carry it on, but Sundry Circumstances have Occurred, to Render it impossible at this Season of the year, to make it with any degree of Accuracy — & the Money Sent me for the purpose of providing Quarters, Fuel &c.
