Sir
I have just rec'd a favour [undecipherable] informing me that some Rifles might be procured at York Town, and desiring that a Standard [undecipherable] might be set to work — In the [undecipherable] I shall have the honour to inform you of the State of things here but neglected telling you that I had ordered two guns to be completed in [undecipherable] on [undecipherable] which I designed for you, that you might have an opportunity before [it] might be too late, to direct any Alterations you deemed proper —
I regret you will have it [undecipherable] much — before I heard of your [undecipherable] from York —
I informed the Gun-Smiths here to employ those of York Town under their contract if they could not furnish themselves 1000 within the time limited, which I apprehended they could not. this I did because it did not then appear that I was authorised to enter myself directly into such a Contract and judging that the Service might be forwarded thereby —
I shall immediately inform myself what has been done in consequence — and conduct myself Accordingly
