Fort Pitt Jan^y 12. 1793 [27] [For] ...is there is no Six pound Shot at this place I have taken the liberty of Engaging four hundred to be Cast at Turnbull & Marmie Furnace, which is now in Blast, M^r Turnbull says he will deliver Round or Grape Shot, or any other Castings at this place considerably Cheaper than they can be bought from any other place He desires me to Inform you, that if Requested he will Cast Mortar Howitzer, Cohom or Swivel, equal in quality to any that has been made in the United States, and if any of them are wanted, he wishes that orders may come forward as early as possible I am going on with the Buildings with all possible Expedition, the Weather continues so Severe, that Lumber Cannot be got by water, which has greatly increased the difficulty of procuring Materials, and also of making an Estimate, with any degree of accuracy, I expect however to Compleat it, & to forward it, together with a Sketch of the [undecipherable] to be defended, & the works, by Capt Blinton, who is to set off for Philadelphia the 18^th Instant. By accounts from Lieut Jeffers, the 11 Instant at Fort Franklin all was quiet there, Lieut Jeffers says he often Complains much for want of Coats, Shirts, & Blankets, he is anxious for a Reinforcement, Says some of the Series he had Enlisted, had deserted, and others that had promised to Enlist, Refused because he had not Cloathing to give them — Complaints has gone to a Treaty at Buffalo Creek on the Lake — his fidelity is greatly depended on by Lieut Jeffers, and the People of that Quarter. Reports that came by way of Fort Franklin say that the Indians in the late Action, at Gen^l St Clairs had 300 Killed and a great number wounded, that Capt Briant is amongst the former, & there was upwards of 800 Canadians, & several British Officers, in the Engagement — The Packet this Moment arrived with your favour of the 6 Instant, together with Several other Letters which shall be duly forwarded — The Militia Escort mentioned in my last is not yet Returned from Fort Franklin, but expected in the [undecipherable]. I shall then endeavor to obtain another Detach^t of Militia to Reinforce the Garrison of Fort Franklin, till Cap^t. Cass arrives— I shall have means provided for transporting the Indian Goods to Fort Franklin, the Moment they Reach this place — The Lieut of Washington and Alleghany Counties, have already engaged Scouts, by Your Orders, the others have certainly Received Your Letter. I shall take the liberty of communicating that part of Your letter to the Committee of Pittsburgh, which assures, the Frontier Inhabitants of such ample and Generous Means of Protection. I believe with you that Complaints are sincere, but would not a Post Established at Presque on the Lake give greater confidence to him & his adherents, also facilitate future Operations, that may be carried on that way.
