[Extract of a letter from Sam! Hodgdon Esq. to the Secry of War — to be attended to in Settlement of the Accounts of the Levies &c ——]
Extract of a Letter from Samuel Hodgdon Quarter Master
Dated Fort Washington 10th January 1792.—
"The levies having been long since dispersed nothing respecting them can be affected by M! Swan's arrival".
"The loss of the officers papers in the late action prevented the possibility of any adjustment of their accounts here, but as the evidences of all advances made them are in my hands, no loss can arise to the public"
"All advances have been made to Colonels for the Regimental staff-rolls, to Majors for the staff on battalion rolls, to Captains on Company rolls.— No individual payments have been made to non-commissioned officers or privates — Subaltern officers have generally received their pay from me."
"The difficulty that operated to prevent a final adjustment of levy accounts at the time they were disbanded, will continue to operate to the same effect, until the proper powers determine what documents or evidences shall be admitted for lost vouchers."
Many, other advances have been made by me on the generals warrants for the support of the Levy corps on the way to their several rendezvous — to the first and second United States Regiments for the recruiting service and other purposes — a schedule of all which is making out, and will be sent forwards to the Paymaster, by the next safe conveyance, that he may have compleat information relative to all advances of money made by me which are finally to be adjusted by him."
Honble Henry Knox Esqr.
Secretary of War —"
