[Col. W. Sargent
from
General Knox]
Philadelphia 6th January
179c
My dear Sargent
I received your letter of the 14th of Nov. I pass over the event which gives you and all of us [too?] so much pain — It is in vain to regret the past; we must endeavor to remedy the evil in future.
I rely that the General on you have arranged the defensive protection of Gallipolis, and the Settlements at Muskingum — Ha[s]kell's company will be Stationed at Muskingum.
Some papers and plans will be laid immediately before Congress, for their consideration and decision, which I hope will be such as shall be entirely adequate to the occasion.
Please to let me know your inclinations as to a military life. I am your affectionate friend H Knox
Colo W. Sargent.
