Building a Flat, Etc.
Document 1791It seems proper to employ some person to build a flat which will be much needed since the river will not be fordable for the remainder of the season. Should Hodgdon think it proper to send two sawyers with tools and one or two mechanics, Armstrong will superintend the building of one. The grindstone at Fort Washington is not very large and will in one month be worn out so a new one should be sent with the return of the boat.

In my letter of the 18th past I neglected mentioning to you the Article of Tar & Ocum in case you thought proper to employ some person to build a flat which will be much wanted from this Post confident the River will not be fordable again this season. Should you think proper to send two Sawyers with the Tools I have returned for, with one or men, Mehoniche, Smith, superintend the building of me. Plank will be wanted to make Tanks for the Men as well as for Doors Lining of the Purposes —
The Grindstone at this Garrison is not larger than a Kentucky Cheese & will in one Month be worn out, beg you to send one by the Return of this Boat the Articles of Stores as mentioned in your
letter were not to be found, I made diligent search for them could neither see or hear any thing of them either for Capt Beatty or Mc Harding —
I wish to had you could instantly or at farthest a few Days, and let me inform you that I conceive the Axes in Store at least many of them are made of Iron only, fire and use water will not harden them so as to make them usefull
