Novem. 1791 Sir As there is a probability of a part of the Troops that are yet to come forward, arriving too late in the Season to descend the Ohio before the Winter, I presume it will be necessary to provide Quarters at this Post. As I have not had Instructions on this point, shall wait your Order. Permit however beg leave to Suggest that there is not a certainty of Boats descending the Ohio, with Safety, after the tenth of December — The Barracks in Fort are out of Repair, & indeed out of our Possession, therefore Quarters are wanted; a House, or Houses, must be Rented in [undecipherable] for that purpose — By a Gentleman who left Fort Washington on the [undecipherable] Ultimo, We are informed that three days previous, to that date the Army had moved on from their first Station 23 Miles advanced of Fort Washington and was to Establish an other Post at the Junction of Bad River with the [undecipherable] — [undecipherable] the Weather has been Remarkably fine, it is more than probable that Gen. St Clair has Established his principle Post — He also says that, almost every Morning, Horses were missing, supposed to be stolen by Indians, that were said to be in small parties, hanging on the Flanks of the Army, but without daring to approach in day light — The Incidental Charges at this Post by means of Transportation, portinage & Forage of Horse, [undecipherable], far beyond what I first Expected. I find Myself under the Necessity of Applying for a Small Sum to Enable me to discharge my Engagement — Five hundred dollars I believe will answer that purpose, but as I have not had your Order to draw for Money [undecipherable] point out the mode by which [undecipherable] [undecipherable] the [undecipherable] fit is Convenient, that, that Sum should be sent forward to me in post Notes, payable at twenty or thirty days.
