[War Department Papers

War department, Oct. 10th 1791.
Sir.
I have received your letter of the 18th instant, and a weekly return of Captain Smith's recruits.
You say that the want of clothing is the cause of your not being more successful in recruiting. In my letter to Captain Smith of the 13th inst. I requested that he would transmit me a particular return of every article of clothing received for his recruits and the quantity wanting to complete his company. I also directed Mr Hill, the contractor, to furnish him for the present, with thirty suits from the clothing which was expected hourly from the Eastward, and which no doubt must by this time have arrived. — I now repeat the request, that you will find
forward the return required of Capt. Smith.
I Shall order on the Knapsacks requested.
I am
Sir
Your humble Servt
H Knox
Lieut. Bezaleel Howe.
