Sir Agreeably to your request I have made some enquiry relative to payments, or advances made by the State to their Officers & Men on account of depreciation in the course of this enquiry I find. New York. Did not make any advances prior to the [undecipherable] of 1780, but from that period to the 1 Janry [undecipherable] 1782 they paid their Officers & Men in [undecipherable: Gold] and Species & Settled with the Troops for the pay of 1781 and [undecipherable: issued] Certificates for the latter which Certificates were taken in payment of Forfeited Estates. Connecticut. Settled with the Troops for depreciation [undecipherable] to the 1 [undecipherable: Jan] 1782. The balance that was due for depreciation to the 1 [undecipherable: Jan] 1782 was divided into four installments, the [undecipherable: first] [undecipherable] of which were paid by the [undecipherable: Treasurer] of that State in [undecipherable: Gold], these Certificates had interest calculated on them from 1 [undecipherable: Jan] 1780 to the 1 [undecipherable: June] 1782, any [undecipherable] that in the [undecipherable: first] installment there was a depreciation of about 19 [undecipherable] which was in the [undecipherable] in circulation. The [undecipherable] of these Certificates were taken in [undecipherable] & made redeemable to [undecipherable] [undecipherable] & those who could keep them [undecipherable] [undecipherable] the [undecipherable: Bank], or may receive it at the [undecipherable] of [undecipherable] Redeemability. Maryland — paid no part on account of depreciation, but advanced & Men pay [undecipherable] from the 1 Aug^t 1780 to 1 [undecipherable: Jan] [undecipherable] in what was called [undecipherable] Money equal to Gold & Silver. North Carolina. Settled with their Troops to the 1 [undecipherable: Jan] 1782, and paid them one fourth part in Cash, i.e. in their paper, but which at the time of payment was equal to Specie.
