Sir
I have received your favor of the twenty sixth ultimo, and I now enclose you a duplicate of mine to the same date.
As Captain Thompson marched from Bedford on the twentieth of August it is a little surprising that he had not arrived at Fort Pitt to time your letter was written, but it is presumed he would arrive before your departure from thence.
The several objects of your letter will be attended to, and the name of your relative will be placed on the list, and submitted to the President of the United States with the other candidates.
It is devoutly to be wished, that you will have a speedy passage down the Ohio, protect the remaining part of the Season may be improved for milatary operations.
I have the honor to be
Sir vr
Henry Knox
Secretary mr.

Major General Richard Butler
