[Undecipherable] 1791 XXIX-70 Boston the 20th August 1781. Dr General! That very ingenious mechanic Mr. Joseph Pope of this Town, who made the celebrated Orrery which the Government purchased for the University of Cambridge, brought with him on his return from England, a great Variety of Drawings of many of the most useful and late invented Machines, Mills, &c. which he is too disinterested to make money by; but which he means for the benefit of America-. He is making some models with considerable Improvements, & means to make many more all which he means to convey to Philadelphia,there to be deposited under the direction of the United States, for the use of all our fellow Citizens. At his request I have taken the Liberty of writing to you, and of entreating that through you these models &c may be presented: And if it be not too much Trouble, you will do him a particular favour and serve the Interest of our Country if you will write to him or to me, and acquaint him how, or in what manner most proper; he [undecipherable] send forward and direct his return intended Donation the particular Forms of which he obtained at the Risk of his Liberty, at last may his Respects attend Mrs Knocks _ And with perfect Esteem and Respect I remain your most obed. humb. Servt. J. Gardiner P.S. Capt Hill has seen the model of the new invented wind mill, and can give you some Idea of that great acquisition &c.
