[XXIX-26]
New York July 26th 91
Sir,
In conformity to your remarks I here take the liberty to give you my candid and impartial opinion of Mr John Houston of Georgia —
Mr Houston no doubt posses talents of the first order, together with a mind highly cultivated and improved by a very liberal education — if I do not mistake he finished his professional Studies at the temples in England — his moral character is perfectly fair and unimpeachable — and no man perhaps is actuated by more independent, and purer principles of honor and Justice — he possesses in a high degree, clearness of Judgment, dignity of manners, and decision of conduct — he is nearly of the age of fifty — he is said by some to be in debt, but I believe by no means embarrassed — with great Respect & Esteem.
