Brother!
I send you by D.J Jeffries, Tewenaga, my best wishes, treat him as your Child —
I have been kind to your Messengers, my Children & hope them safe to you, nothing can hurt them but fools, who I have taken all possible care to guard against.
The Governor of the Western Territory Gent M'Clees sent you a message last Spring, there is yet no answer, I sent you a speech this summer by the Big tree, Cowandaga, & Towanrios, Brother twins, there is no answer - what you have to say will be sent to me by Tewenaga & next month Mr Nicholson, what comes by them or either of them I can believe. — Quenistatchie, I know your heart, you are a Man - I am confident you will speak your mind. I believe you mean well, & I believe the new arrows, Hampton & other of your head men whom I know means well also. I believe you love your people truly, & that you wish to Keep them in friendship with the US, but you know how easy it is for a few fine clothes & a few fine words to mislead a great number of the people, who are not
as wise as their Chiefs- you are therefore addressed by me as a friend to men of all kinds not to think hard of being oblig'd to work hard for your people. Keep them from taking bad advice if any is offered, help them from doing evil to the people of the U.S. they are the only people who can be your friends, & the only people that can do you & your people a great injury. they seek peace to all men & particularly to the Indians of this country, & they would not take so mean a means to induce them to be at peace for all the injury in the power of any other people to do them, is like taking the top off a Bush & tree which causes it to spread out more branches.
This is not meant as a menace, it is a truth which speaks for itself - Believe me I am your Friend & the friend of your Nation —
