Knox Boston July 22 [1] Sir I have for several years been endeavoring to bring the manufacture of gun-powder to as great a degree of perfection as I was able, and had the satisfaction of supplying a large quantity of that article in the late war, of a quality by which the Quartermaster for this State determined equal to English powder. — I have now a small quantity on hand, some samples of which, the bearer hereof will exhibit. well knowing your disposition to promote the manufacture of an article so essential to our national safety, and the Interest of your native State in particular, I will only say that it would give me pleasure to supply for the public use a small quantity now & a larger quantity in Sept. or Octo-[ber if the article should be wanted & if I can do it] Any contract which you may think proper to make with M^r Israel Holt for the delivery of gun-powder, I will endeavor to fulfill. — Altho' my powder has been approved as having the essential properties, yet I wish for farther improvements, which is one object of Mr. Holt's journey to Pennsylvania; any advice from you, Sir, conducive to this object will be esteemed a particular favor.
