It being the wish of the Sec. of War that the Troops under your command should receive some pay previous to their march on the intended expedition, he has [strikethrough: and] directed me to deliver to Capt. C. Beatty, three Months pay for the Officers & Men of the old Troops, [strikethrough: on the footing] [undecipherable] to put on a footing with those [strikethrough: General] [undecipherable] of Troops [undecipherable] now raised — also one Months pay for the [strikethrough: Officers] [undecipherable] General Staff — the Field Officers [strikethrough: [undecipherable]] [undecipherable] and on more pay for the Army generally, agreeably to the enclosed estimates. [strikethrough: This money] Captain Beatty will take with him 9000 dollars [strikethrough: &[undecipherable]] in Gold & [strikethrough: the] 8,844 Dols in Post Notes, at 30 days Sight for Cash — It is hoped the latter he will be able to negotiate at Fort Pitt.
The Sec. of War has directed this Money to be put into the hands of Saml. Hodgdon Esqr. Quar.
