[Letter from [undecipherable] Knox / June 11, 1791 / [undecipherable]] War department June 11^th 1791. Sir, Your letter of the 5^th of last month, enclosing a letter from Colonel Crocket Lieutenant of Wythe County was duly received. The letter should have been immediately answered, if the points upon which the Colonel complains, could have been remedied by me. — But, upon the arrival of the President of the United States, they shall be submitted to him — It is however questionable, whether he would think himself authorized to furnish any of the articles required, ammunition excepted, or, make any alteration in the rate of pay established by law. It seems reasonable that the exposed counties should be furnished with ammunition by the public; and in such cases as the furnishing it from the public stores would be inconvenient, or impracticable, it is most probable, a reasonable allowance might be made for that article by the United States, at the time of the adjustment of the accounts of the militia I have the honor to be Sir, with great respect, Your most obed^t Serv^t H Knox Sec^y of War The Lieutenant Governor of the State of Virginia.
