My dear friend
I embrace the occasion of enclosing a letter to your lovely daughter of asking about your health.
You mentioned some time ago that Ensign Thompson could not be found. I have been informed he was soon expected to return. but if this should not be the case the person desirous and worthy of succeeding him must produce legal proof of his residence within the State, or I do not perceive how the President would be justified in making another appointment.
Our forces here Succeed better than our usually The recruiting service in the three western States has been unfortunate but we have now two thousand troops on the march, and most of them arrived upon the frontiers. and we shall march nearly one thousand more during the present month. An adequate force will be reasonably assembled at Fort Washington. and the Kentucky mounted militia men have the opportunity of shewing to the Continent how to fight Indians.
Yours & affectionately
