Mr. [undecipherable] 6 June [17—]
The [undecipherable] Secretary [undecipherable]
Cleveland, Ohio
Claude Preston has your communication this day by way of [undecipherable]. He is now unable to go forward to the Mother Indians on account of the Indians. He would have obtained most an event, after consulting with them at [undecipherable] Creek, from the 23d of April until the 8th of May, but the Indians could not proceed in canoes along the shore, or by land, but appointed a vessel. He applied to [undecipherable] Gordon, Commanding Officer at [undecipherable] for a vessel, either public or private, for which he would pay, but he could not obtain one. The design therefore of visiting the noble Indians to peace, previously to [undecipherable] them, has been frustrated.
Brand, with three warriors, having [undecipherable] and McKee with them, set out from Grand river to the Western Indians about the 11th of May. He desires me to say, his [undecipherable] [undecipherable] that he will return in June to the [undecipherable] at the Painted Post, and the [undecipherable] will forward to [undecipherable] the Western Indians to peace.
