No. 10 Philadelphia the 14 May 1791 Sir By this Letter you will be informed that I have contracted with Colonel James Marshall now present, for the supply of fifty horses suitable for Cavalry–and that as they are purchased they are to be delivered to you at Pittsburg–you will therefore make such arrangements immediately for their accomodation as are Necessary–whether it may not be best to put them to pasture in the vicinity of Pittsburg from oeconomical consideration you can best judge being in the spot–or whether such support will keep them in heart to perform the duties expected from them forms the next consideration–At all events they must be well and safely kept–the expence of of which I will provide for when I come forward–Colonel Marshall is also to furnish us with forty boats at Red Stone to take the southern troops to Pittsburg–from whence they will be used as occasions require–besides these provisions I have authorised Mr. John Achison of Warrington to purchase twenty horses, and twenty boats under similar circumstances–which if produced to you will be received as in the case of Marshall I will thank you to Note particularly the age, colour, and height of every horse you receive for I am determined to be in a situation to detect any imposition if any are offered–but from the characters of the persons employed, I expect to be well served– As the business grows on your hands, you may expect a reasonable additional pay–of this I shall be a competent judge when I see you– With sentiments of esteemI amSirYour Most Obedie[nt] [undecipherable torn]Samuel HodgdonQMG Major Isaac Craig
