Dexter, that in Consulting with the old Subaltern Officers I find that Jeremiah Olney Greenman is disirous again of assuming a Millitary life–he was a Lieutenant of Excellent Character in my Regmt and in the war has has Commanded, with Reputation, several Vessels from this Port:- I therefore with peculiar pleasure Recommend him as a Suitable person to be appointed to the Command of the Company to be Raised in this State, and This I do with the more Confidence as I have had a long experience of his Millitary Tallents, and the particular knowledge I have of his persevering Fortitude and abilities, Five me every reason to believe he will do honor to the Appointment, should he be so fortunate as to obtain it, to ensure which permit me Sir, to request your powerfull Interest in his favour. This Gentleman [was?] Recommended by me some time past, to the Secretary of the Treasury as the first mate of the Butter building in Connecticutt, but that appointment not being made and a Millitary Life being more Congenial to his wishes, I have thought proper to name him to you.- and shall acquaint the Secretary of the the Treasury by with the Circumstance, by this oppty and if he wishes the first mate of the Cutter to be from this State I know several [undecipherable] Officers of Reputation who that stand Ready to accept the appointment— The Cloathing for the Troops mentioned in your last letter, has come to Land in good order.
