Sir, § 1. You are hereby appointed to take charge of all the public Stores belonging to the United States which shall be deposited at Fort Pitt, for which service you shall receive at the rate of thirty dollars per month. I have directed a number of arms and accoutrements, and a large quantity of ammunition to be immediately transported to that post Samuel Hodgdon Esq will deliver you the returns. You will have the said articles safely secured in the public Stores at Fort Pitt if said Stores should be so circumstanced as to receive them safely. But, if the magazine and public buildings should require repairs, you will have them executed as œconomically as possible, transmitting to me the particulars and amount of such repairs. Pitt, and all other Stores, are to be delivered to the orders of the commanding officer of the troops of the United States on the Ohio, and therefore you are not to send them down the Ohio unless particularly ordered to do so by the said commanding officer. You will keep exact and regular accounts of all public property received and delivered by you, taking care that you deliver nothing without orders and receipts, excepting in such particular emergencies as preclude your receiving such orders. You will make me monthly returns of all articles in your possession, and of your receipts and deliveries. You must be particularly careful to transact all the public business on the best terms, and that no expense be incurred, excepting as absolutely necessary.
