Benj. Hawkins Statement Dec 1790 Some time in 1784 the Creeks expressed their disapprobation of the treaty at Augusta in the month of June McGillivray sent a talk to Governor Houston strongly expressive of that disapprobation, this was laid before the Legislature and they on the 22^d of Feb. 1785 passed an act directing the governor to appoint commissioners on behalf of the State and to invite the Creeks to appoint persons on their side to meet and and in conjunction to run the line. On the 15^th of march the governor sent a talk to the Kings head men and Warriors of the Creek nation and invited them to chuse commissioners on this part in conformity with the said act. The Indians accordingly sent down the Kings and some head men who arrived at Savanna on the 26^th of June, they then met two of the three commissioners appointed by the State, and had long and frequent conversations with them on the treaty and the [undecipherable] land being the land in question, the Indians uniformly dis[undecipherable] the treaty and complained of it as being in some [undecipherable] forced on them Upon efforts being made to settle the differences, they declared they were not a compleat representation of their nation and could by no means agree to relinquish their claims or settle the disputes. But agreed that every thing might remain in its then present State untill a proper representation of this nation should meet and settle all differences and then the commissioners parted with ambical promises to meet again at some short and convenient time to be agreed on by the Creek Nation. Congress having appointed commissioners to treat with the Southern Indians the Executive of Georgia had [undecipherable] and were invited to accommodate their differences, at a treaty proposed to be held at Galphinton The letter of the Commissioners dated the 17^th of Nov. 1785 at Nassau is true as to what [undecipherable].
