[XXVI - 99]
dear Harry Boston July 11th 1799
I thank you for your fav[or]
of the 4th Inst —
[(1791)] on Monday the Cincinna[ti]
had a very respe[c]table meeting, we dine[d]
together at Concert Hall & pass'd a happ[y]
and joyful day. Judge [undecipherable] gave us a
beautifull oration and was very much
admir'd by all parties, except a few who
disliked the word "Consolidation" they
have attend'd the Judge in the papers, &
I believe will not let him rest — we
Elected the Same Officers we had last
year, and chose our Delegates to attend
at the General meeting in May next, they
are General H. Knox — General [undecipherable] —
General [undecipherable]. General Cobb & Doct[or]
[undecipherable] — [undecipherable] the
the Governor has been very Ill, he was
[undecipherable: seiz'd?] violently on Monday last when
attending the Town Oration. I saw him
yesterday, he is much better & in a fair way
to be from out again —
I wish it was in your power to
employ Capt. [undecipherable] in some way or
other. he is really in a disagreable and
distressing Situation. he is a man of
[undecipherable: probity?] and integrity and altho his
virtues must have frequently been put
to the test, I believe he has never
deviated from the [undecipherable] of a Gentleman
and Soldier — his only crime, is his
Poverty — how or which way he has
kept along as to his Cloathing &c I
am at a loss — the Family with
whom he boards called on me
yesterday, they are poor, but [undecipherable]
very
very friendly [strikethrough: [undecipherable]] & they say [undecipherable] for
be their own for they could not have
a greater affection for him and speak
of him in the highest terms — [undecipherable] this
Situation of [undecipherable] they cannot [undecipherable]
him any longer. he has lived with
them upwards of two years, they have
done all his washing [undecipherable] the
whole time, & they have never received
one farthing as [undecipherable: least?] consideration, &
they say he is [undecipherable: just?] a good man, if they
were able they alone would let him
go from them, but they are poor, &
depend on boarders for their [undecipherable] —
If you could find [undecipherable: business?] for
him at West point or any where else,
so as to take him from his present most
[underline: disagreable Situation,] it would be
[undecipherable] a Clever Fellow against a
a future [undecipherable] — as to wages he [undecipherable]
ask for [undecipherable], only to give him — [undecipherable]
of a pair of Shoes & the Rations of a
Soldier — only place him where he can
be kept [underline: a live] until his Country may
want his Services — he does not [undecipherable]
[undecipherable] you, as that the Family
have [undecipherable] to me respecting him. thy
discovered great delicacy on this business
having [undecipherable] nothing to him on the [undecipherable]
[undecipherable] of [undecipherable] years, and I then [undecipherable]
them to delay speaking to him for a short
time —
my love to Mrs Knox & the
Family —
Your affect[ionat]e
H. Jackson
