[W^m Cavenough — 10^th July 1790] [endorsement, lower right, inverted: [undecipherable] / Henry Knox / [undecipherable]] As one of the most unfortunate men on the Earth I presume the liberty of addressing [undecipherable] Sir as a Gentleman of Humanity. I particularly feel the mortifying truth here that my [undecipherable] on [undecipherable] can [undecipherable] my addressing a Gentleman [undecipherable] Sir the mortif[ication?] upon the Subject of my [undecipherable] as wherein he has no share or Interest, But Sir the [undecipherable] has severely pressed upon me, and has left me nearly a [Wretch?] as the Human [undecipherable] Conceive I therefore hope Sir that this my present unhappy Situation, [Excite?] — in a breast like yours, [undecipherable] Apology for this [Intervention?], I now know of but one possible means, whereby I may be restored to happiness & peace and I am free to hope that [undecipherable] — that in time it may be, in your power to Bestow [undecipherable] on me, Permit me therefore to beg that I may have the Honor of an Interview with you at any time [undecipherable] to yourself. When I shall Explain myself fully to you, upon the Subject that gives rise — in this Address I can produce Testimonials to my favor which are Substantial & Unquestionable.
