[BOSTON, JUNE 22] [FREE]
General Henry Knox
Secretary at War
Post New York
[Endorsed upside down: by [undecipherable] — / June 22. 179[0]]
my dear Harry — Boston June 22. 1790
H.J. 7 oClock Eveg —
This is since the one I wrote you by Capt Freeman, and I am sorry to inform you that the Senate have also made choice of Mr [underline: George Cabot] by a majority of twenty two out of thirty one. And is therefore elected. there is no doubt but he will accept, as his mind is bent on the Subject —
I feel for Wm D— as I think it will be a great disappointment to him, and will very much derange his family — Mr Brooks, Mr [undecipherable] C. Jones, and my friend Cobb exerted themselves all in their power, and were not able to obtain more than [undecipherable] votes for him at any one time. — The House were determined to make a change and used every art to effect it — it was given out last Eve & this morning to the House that Mr Dalton was in favor of high Salaries, and that he voted for [undecipherable] dollars to the Senators — this with the influence of the Junto effectually did the business — I wd for Wm D. to be continued [strikethrough: ——————] — but as that could not be effected. I'm glad that Mr Cabot has succeeded in preference to the other Candidates — who were Doct Jarvis, Mr Gorham & Mr Holton —— Mr G had the highest number in the first instance upwards of 40. out of 120 — Mr C by [then?] had upwards of thirty — & Mr D——n [by?] the second time — Mr C had the highest number Mr H upwards 20. the other two [fell?] [short?] of Mr D. only one. but no choice — the third time Mr Cabot had 63 out of
123 and that closed the contention —
The court will not transact any [undecipherable] day, —— Thomas and Brown are both Representatives from the [Eastern?] but nothing has as yet been done or [undecipherable] respecting the [undecipherable] ——
my love to Mrs Knox and your family &
Your Affectionate
[Signature: H. Jackson]
