[Endorsement on cover sheet: W.B. [undecipherable] papers / Gen'l Knox / May 29 [17]90 / [undecipherable]]
War Office May 29th 1790
Sir,
I have received a letter from Susanna Britt Wife of Edmund Britt an Invalid Pensioner residing in the Town of Boston inclosing a petition to the President of the United States Setting forth, that her husband, being gone at Sea for the benefit of his health, left with her a power of attorney to receive his pension, but that this power being Stolen out of her desk with Sundry other papers, She could not produce the necessary Vouchers to receive the said pension, wherefore on application made to You and [strikethrough: undecipherable] the payment was refused.
I have not thought it necessary to trouble the president with this case — as She mentions in her letter that She is able to prove the facts to your Satisfaction by accreditable persons and namely the Reverend Mr Clark and Mr Joseph Barnell
I therefore conceive that in case such evidences can be produced to you as in the opinion of the attorney of the district certified to you in writing are Sufficient to prove the fact, that the same will serve as a proper voucher at the Treasury
I have the honor to be,
Sir Your most obedient
humble Servant
H Knox
the Honorable
Benjamin Lincoln Esqr
