Ins^t. respecting the accounts of General Hazen & his several claims upon the United States, I beg leave to refer you to my report, and letter, of the [8] day of [Ultimo] and the documents therewith, which contains all the information in my possession relative to the situation of those Acc^ts. Cl^ms as also the obstacles which operated with the late Comm^rs of Army Acc^ts. in the admission of the claims of the General — [See the 6^th page] In respect to the balance which may appear to be due to Gen^l Hazen, I have to observe that in all similar cases [strikethrough: it has] [strikethrough: undecipherable] it has been the established custom to discharge the same in a certificate [strikethrough: of the] [strikethrough: undecipherable] bearing interest at 6[p^ct] from the time the balance became due — I further [strikethrough: would] beg leave to refer you particularly [mentioning the] to that part of the Report, where Gen^l Hazen is charged by Mr. Chinn with the sum of 26,692 [undecipherable] dollars of which [charges] the Item the General [strikethrough: has given his receipt for] [strikethrough: undecipherable] 15,269 dol. being supported by a receipt [strikethrough: from] Gen^l Hazen should and in my opinion [strikethrough: I would] be opposed to the balance that has been reported by the late Commiss^rs & myself as due to him I am Sir Your most ob^t Serv^t W.
