The death of his father

Boston Apl 11. 1790
my dear Harry
I am [undecipherable] by the post— yesterday at half past one o'Clock my honoured Father departed this life. he was calm resigned, and died in full faith & perfect happiness in the world of Spirits— this was a great consolation to my honoured mother, & to the Children & friends around him— my aged mother is very much afflicted, and cannot reconcile the separation they having lived together fifty eight years last month, and but very little apart during that period—
I approve what you say respecting the additional Troops to be raised— you ask me whether you shall put in my claim for a Regiment amid others, and at the [undecipherable] because you believe it will not be for my interest, under the prospects of losing my Father—
By the death of my father, I suppose my mother will incline to break up [her?] keeping [and?] live with my brother in Brookline in that case I shall be perfectly free to engage in any situation that may be [undecipherable: probable reading thought best] for my interest and Honor— however I am not [undecipherable] as to a military life, and if, there is only one Regiment raised, and the President thinks proper to give it to another [and that [undecipherable] my Idea] I shall, perfectly acquiesce in the measure— altho I think the disappointment, [undecipherable: probable reading loss] & embarrassment that I sustained by my appointment to the Regiment in 1789, to, my putting of [it?] one in 1784, entitles me to [undecipherable: probable reading some] consideration, and gives me a claim equal if not before any other person whatever— if the establishment of the Troops is augmented so as to make it necessary to have a 2nd [undecipherable] I should prefer that appointment to the Command of a Regiment or even a Brigadier General, provided military rank is annexed to it —— but why do I mention 2nd [undecipherable] I am not anxious to be a Soldier at [undecipherable] time of life, upon no other consideration than the [underline: uncertainty] of my being able to procure an appointment in any other line— every thing considered, if, through your influence, I could be brought into view in a Civil appointment, it would be very pleasing and agreable, I am now upwards of forty years of age, and have not a sufficiency to support me, with the property I have, or shall have after my mother's death, and [undecipherable] I am unfit to engage in business on equal terms with mankind in general, this may be a fault, but I cannot help it— if you know me as well, if not better than I do myself, act for me as you think best, and I shall be satisfied— possibly something may turn up, in the Secretary of the Treasury[']s plan to remove our [undecipherable] General to [some] more important Appointments by which means it will make an opening in that line, [strikethrough: ——] or if the plan is adopted there may be some appointments necessary, to which I may be a proper candidate, I pray you not to be unmindful of me, indeed I depend on you, and should be extremely embarrased if I thought any one except your family, had a [undecipherable: probable reading prior] claim on you than myself—
my Father has left my brother Joseph & myself his Executors— he has left the interest & income of the whole of his property both real & personal to the support of my mother during her life, and after her death has ordered his estate to be sold & divided into five equal lots to be paid to each of his Children or their representatives,— the income of the whole will be fully sufficient to support my mother in any [undecipherable] [she?] only [undecipherable], indeed I [undecipherable] [she?] will be able to spend more than half of it, if [she?] [undecipherable] to keep house & not live with my brother. ——————
Mr Nicholas [undecipherable] died on Friday morning very [undecipherable], he had been [undecipherable] but a few days— he has left a very [undecipherable] family ——— my love to your family — & believe me your [undecipherable]
H. [undecipherable: probable reading Jackson]
[undecipherable]
you will observe by yesterday's paper a meeting of all the Officers of the late Massachusetts Line of the Army is to be held at the Green Dragon on Thursday afternoon— this is for the purpose which I mentioned to you in my last— all our friends are opposed to the measure, and will be there to convince them of the impropriety of the measure at this time— General Heath is then Chairman and wishes them, which will be the first time he has ever been with the Officers since the dissolution of the Army — my [undecipherable] will be [undecipherable] that I [undecipherable] not be able to be with them—
yours
H.J.
