[Stephen Higginson Esq] [17 March 1790] [XXX-180] [5543] Sir Boston march 11. 179[0] my eldest Son, John, who was enrolled in the Corps under Gen^l. Jackson three years ago, as an Ensign, I imagine will be desirous of again embracing a military life. Though, as now in good Business, having the command of a Ship, & the Sale of her Cargo each Voyage, has convinced for the employment of a Soldier, which was born with him, will lead him to seize the first opening to change his Situation. I before gave way to this marine inclination of his, & shall not again oppose it. before he sailed last, he told me, that he should prefer being a Captain in the Army, to the situation of an eminent & wealthy merchant. with this strong impression on his mind, I know he will never be easy, till he is in the military line again. he is now abroad, but will be at home in two months. Should you before that time, raise any new troops, which I am informed may be the case, I will thank you to reserve an opening for him, if that be not improper. As I am convinced he will enter on some time or other, I wish to secure for him the best situation I can. he is a genteel fellow, about 23 years old, & addicted to that kind of life. —— I congratulate you upon the [undecipherable] of the general Government. it affords a very pleasing prospect to those, who have a share in administering it, & is consoleing to those who have long looked to it for protection & safety. may it continue to progress from one degree of perfection to another, till its benign influence shall be as extensive, & produce all those happy effects which its most sanguine votaries have ever contemplated! —— With all due respect I am Sir your very Hum^ble Servant —— Stephen Higginson Honble Gen^l Knox
