Sir,
Having written to you on the 20th ultimo respecting the Invalids of the United States, residing in Maryland, I am to presume that you have received the same.
Not having yet received the list of Invalids paid by Maryland from His Excellency the Governor of that State, I request that you would please to apply to him for the same — and that you would govern your payments thereby, provided that in all cases in which payments should have been made by the State subsequent to the 5th of march last, that you deduct the same, from the first money — or if paid up by the said State for the full period of six months from and after the said 5th of March last, that you forbear to make any payments in such cases.
You will however please to observe that the pensions to be paid are to actual Invalids only or their representatives — Returns have not yet been received of pensions paid by the respective States to Widows or orphans of officers who died or were killed in service and of consequence Congress have not yet had the means of making provision for any deficiencies of pensions of this nature if any such deficiencies remain.
I have in my Estimate to the Secretary of Treasury estimated the Invalids residing in Maryland at 7000 dollars per annum, but I have no evidence whereon to form any precise judgement, respecting the sum.
The returns required by my letter of the 29th ultimo which you will please punctually to transmit, will enable me to be more accurate in future.
I have the honor to be
Sir, Yours Most Obedt
Humble Servant.
