Sir
The letter which I have the honor to inclose was forwarded to me by my friend Major [undecipherable], in consequence of my intimating to him my intention of offering myself a Candidate for an appointment in the Revenue Establishment for the Port of Newport in this State; shou'd ascede to the Union. Should you be of opinion Sir that my past Services, and the Sacrifices I make during eight years in the Service of my Country, justify my application, your friendly efforts to promote my wishes will be ever gratefully acknowledged by
Sir
Your most Obedient
Humble Servant
