Dear Sir,
This will be forwarded to you by my good friend Daniel [undecipherable: Lyman] Esq, whom you will easily recollect as Aid de Camp to Gen. Heath. When the State of Rhode Island shall accede to the confederation, it is his wish to obtain some appointment in the revenue department, for which purpose he is desirous of interesting your good offices in his behalf. Your own observation of the intelligence and activity of Col. Lyman when in service renders it unnecessary to say any thing on the subject of his qualifications, and I know you do not require arguments to induce you to be of service to men of merit. Col. Lyman will endeavor to support his application, by recommendations from the first people in the State — and I flatter myself you will so far comply with his wishes and mine, as to afford him every assistance which may be compatible with the duties of your Station
I have the honor to be,
Dear Sir
Your most Obedient Servant
Honorable General Knox.
