Dear Sir
Your letter of the 8th of June which [strikethrough: was] breathes [strikethrough: nothing] [strikethrough: a generous] a spirit so alive to the happiness of the human race deserved an immediate answer from me. This I ought and intended to have done. But my public employments [strikethrough: constrained] me to postpone it to the present period.
The interest I have in the subject, and the desire I [strikethrough: have] feel for the welfare of the present & future inhabitants, [strikethrough: would] [strikethrough: justify] induce me to consider your ideas as highly valuable and worthy of [strikethrough: change] [strikethrough: and] being cherished & adopted —
