[Major Sargent / 29 Sep^t 1789 —] [Address panel:] [FREE] [postal seal] Honorable Gen'l Knox Secretary of War New York [Private] Marietta 29 ^thy Sep. 1789 The Papers my Dear Sir have announced to us that heart which your losses Anxieties [undecipherable] upon you but wasted me — I feel myself so much one of the concerns of your family as more tenderly to sympathize with you of M^rs [undecipherable] upon this melancholy Occasion — than made my Heart impels me to express, I more [undecipherable] might be [undecipherable] — I shou'd be happy my Dear Sir to hear from you when you may have leisure to afford me a line, upon any Subjects of This Country within my Capacity to inform you of, you may command me most freely — I wish al- ways be engaged in any first Pleasures to contributed to your Interests & Amusements Our Governor has not arrived & I am most anxiously [undecipherable] for him — 'tis very important to us that he be here, & that I should know as soon as possi- ble, nearly, where the Seat of his Government & of Residence will be fixed, that I may very make some Establishment in the Way of Agriculture, to sup- port me in this Country, for the 750 Dollars, I expe- rience I assure me, is unequal to it — we have here at present only Hartford, I [undecipherable] [undecipherable] [persons?] but I suppose [undecipherable] writes you by this Post — Our People are for petitioning for more military to Congress, but I am in Hopes they will [undecipherable], [till?] the Government arrives — We hear [undecipherable] from the Indians that can be rely'd on — they are [now?] & [then?] about our Settlements, but a [undecipherable] upon us of late — I beg you be so obliging as to send the enclosed to my with great Respect & Esteem Your affectionate Humble [servant] W Sargent
