Olney] I had the Honor to Receive your fav.^r of [undecipherable] 2^d April last in due time — but have omitted a Reply to it, as I had hopes this State would long ere this had the Enlighten- 'd policy to adopted the New Constitution — when it was my fixed Intention to make a Tour to New York with a hope to have Secured the appointment mention'd to you in my Brothers Letter — but being disappointed & Seeing no Immediate prospect of this States Joining the Union — I now Sir with great pleasure Acknowledge the friendly Expressions containing in your letter to promote my Interests, which merits my Sincear and unfeig- ned thanks — This will be handed you by the Bearer M^r. Sterry a Merchant of this Town, a Gentleman of unblemi- shed Character and a genuine Federalist. he takes his Lady — (a woman of great merits) with him to New York where he proposes to Spend a few weeks in fitting out his Ship for a Voyage — permitt me Sir to Recommend him (as a particular Friend of mine) to your Friendly notice and acquaintance, any Civilities Shown him while in New York, will lay me und- er additional and particular obligation — By the Inclosed piece in the Chronicle you will See an Illiberal attack on the Cincinnati and our worthy President General — the Author of this vile performance is one Sampson a little pettifogeing antifedderal attorney of this Town — we have thought it most advisable to take no Further Notice of this Dirty performance than just to make a Short Reply in the Gazette which is Inclosed — The General Assembly of this State had a Special Session last week at Newport — among other things they Negatived the Question for Calling a State Convention by 14 Majority — M^r.
