Muhlenberg Esq^r Sep. 12. 1789 Copied] Dear Sir I took it for granted that I had finally Settled my Account with the public as an officer during the War — but on having the Books examined in your Office this Morning — I find I Still Stand charg'd for Clothing rec'd at Yorktown in Virginia, for my own and Family — So much of the Clothing as [undecipherable] I accounted for with the Auditors of Virginia when I settled my Depreciation — Jonas White my Aid, I think did the Like — Lushman my [undecipherable] Aid, who was likewise an Officer in the Line Settled his part with The United States — If any of these Officers drew, under the description as held to pay, it was not by my Order [&] direction but without my [undecipherable: Knowledge?] — I certainly therefore can not account, but for what I rec'd — I will thank You to advise me in what manner I am to act in.
