[To Jon Williams 6 Septr 1789] [Private papers to be after[undecipherable]] New York 6 September 1789 My dear Sir I am indebted recently to you for two favors, the one from Philadelphia containing your letter to Judge McKean and the other from B. oftn respecting Capt Newman. - I will compliment you on your public letter to the Judges, but all the mercantile people who I heard discourse on the subject, were on your Statement of the case, clearly in opinion with you, as to what ought to have been the bye. I Should be happy in favoring Capt Newman, because you request it, and because I believe him to be an excellent Soldier. But the fact is my dear Sir there is no probability of an increased establishment of the troops - But Should it prove otherwise, and Should I have the power to inform the captain, consistently with the general arrangements I Shall embrace the opportunity. I Shall my dear Sir always rejoice to hear of your prosperity, and if in the compass of events I could be made an humble instrument in advancing it, the occasion would gladden my heart. - I am my dear Sir Your sincere friend and humble Servant H Knox Jon Williams Jun Esq. -
