Description

Knox reports to Washington on the status of negotiations held at Fort Harmar on 9 January 1789. Knox enclosed various documents with this letter in order to establish the context of the current negotiations for the new chief executive. These documents include the following: A "Speech of the United Indian Nations, at their Confederate Council, held near the mouth of the Detroit River, the 28th November and 18th December 1786," the "Instructions to the Governor of the Territory of the United States Northwest of the River Ohio, relative to an Indian treaty in the Northern Department, 26 Oct 1787." Knox also references Congressional resolutions dated 21 July 1787, 5 October 1787, 12 October 1787, 22 October 1787, and 2 July 1788.
