[By J Freeman] [May 1. 1789] [answered] Honorable Major General Knox Secretary at War Honored by } M^r Vining } New York Dover, Delaware County, May [undecipherable] Sir, The honor I have had in serving under your immediate Command in the late war, has encouraged me to ask a favor, which is, some employment under [you]; perhaps there may [undecipherable] a Vacancy for a Clerk in the Office, if there is, and the duty is such as you may think me capable of performing, shall esteem it as the greatest favor in being appointed to it Should there be no such Vacancy, & there is any other post, at your disposal, to which you may think me adequate, shall ever acknowledge the favor. The honorable John Vining Esq, has been a member of Senate from this State, has done me the honor of taking charge of this.
