Office of Army Accounts
New York 27 April 1799
Sir,
On comparing the Printed Registers Certificates issued by John Pierce late Commissioner of Army Accounts with the originals on file in this Office a number of Errors appeared in order to prevent unnecessary trouble on your part, & of granting Certificates from this Office to persons who apply with certificates that do not agree with the Printed Register. I have certified such mistakes as on a short examination appeared & now do myself the Honor to enclose them to you for your government— when Certificates apply for the payment of Balances which do not correspond with your Register you can readily turn to the number & immediately correct the Error.— This business has cost me much time & trouble but if it saves myself it will be of essential service to the Public. I greatly regret the business on your part; you will oblige me in acknowledging the receipt of this letter.—
I have the Honor to be with great regard
Sir
