[David Sales Esq^r Thomaston 3 April 1789 To Major General Henry Knox New York] David Sales. Thomaston April 3^d 1789 Worthy Sir, 27. I have your favour of the 10^th January per Capt. Nose; am well pleased, that an Establishment is making at the Fort and Blockthouse Farm, and hope it will answer the Expectations of all concerned. I have, with others, assisted Capt. Nose in procuring such Fencing Stuff as was thought necessary for securing the Improvements the present Year. Likewise, have informed People of their now having an opportunity of discharging their Debts to him as your Agent, according to their Wishes expressed. I have permitted Capt. Nose to take a Copy of your Letter to me of the 4^th Octo. last; he seems to be a Man of a good Disposition and Genius: I shall endeavour to assist him in all Matters that appear to me likely to promote your Interest, in which I expect his is also included. I have had some Conversation with Waterman Thomas Esq; and with Jacob Ludwig Esq; concerning the affairs at Waldoborough, and expect further to pursue the matter in the Course of this Month; but find neither the Germans, nor the People in Thomaston have quite given up their Hope and Expectation of a Decision of the General Court in their favour on the Petitions preferred, which are committed, with Col^o. Saltonstall's Petition, to a joint Committee, and referred to the next Session; therefore a further Time seems to be necessary to convince their Minds of some of the utility of their coming to a settlement with you; others there are who seem heartily to desire a Settlement, but postpone it through fear of being censured by their Neighbours. I have made enquiry concerning the Sales of Lands in Warren for the Payment of Taxes, and find there is no danger from that Quarter, as the Assessments and Sales were none of them conducted conformably to Law, so as to give the Purchasers a Title, should they be disposed to contend for it. I have made Agreements with several Persons and given them Permission to occupy Lots, some in Warren, Waldsborough, and lower St Georges, now Cushing, but find most of the Land is claimed by some Person; however apprehend there will be no great difficulty in disposing of the Land for valuable Considerations, when those Persons that have agreed are accommodated; but among them I expect there will be claims clashing on one another. I shall now attend to that Business with diligence, having been much confined at home through the Winter by Sickness in my Family.
